PLACEMENT TESTING
Many courses at Kellogg Community College require that students have specific skill levels in reading, English, or math. To provide a recommendation for students on which courses to start with to ensure the best chance of success, KCC provides the following placement options to get information for a recommendation of how to begin classes:
1. Complete placement testing at any of the Kellogg Community College Centers, or main campus in Battle Creek. Contact us to set an appointment for virtual testing at a cost of $28.
2. Complete one or more of the self-assessments by clicking on the corresponding link below. After completing the assessment(s), make an appointment to meet with an Academic Advisor to have the discussion of what is your best avenue in choosing courses. Remember to print your results when you go for your appointment.
- Reading Self-Assessment
- Math Self-Assessment (for STEM students)
- Math Self-Assessment (for non-STEM students)
- English Self-Assessment
Contact the Placement Testing office if you have any questions at 269-965-4136 or testing@kellogg.edu. For additional help with placement and course options, contact Academic Advising at 269-965-4124 or advising@kellogg.edu.

Testing Information
General Testing Policies
Identification
A physical government-issued photo identification such as a driver’s license, passport, military ID or KCC student ID is required for testing at the Testing and Assessment Center. Certain specialized testing programs have additional ID requirements.
Retesting
Students must wait a full 24 hours from the time they finish a test to retake the same section of a test. A $5 fee per test section is required.
Phones & Mobile Devices
Smartphones and mobile devices disturb other examinees and should not be brought to the Testing and Assessment Center. The use of a phone or mobile device during a test is strictly prohibited and will be considered cheating.
Lockers
Small lockers are available in the Testing and Assessment Center for storing personal items during your test time. Use of these lockers is subject to the campus locker use policy found in the Student Handbook.
Children at the Testing Center
There are no facilities for child care at the Testing and Assessment Center, and children are not allowed in the testing rooms. College policy prohibits leaving children unattended in any campus building.
Special Accommodations
If you require special accommodations for a KCC test, contact the Center for Student Success at 269-965-4150. We cannot provide special accommodations without proper documentation.
Cheating
Testing and Assessment Center employees closely monitor testing rooms for irregularities. If irregularities are noted, a report will be submitted and the student dismissed.
Testing
There are three sections of the NEXT GENERATION ACCUPLACER: reading, writing and math. Sections are not timed, but students generally spend 30 to 45 minutes on each; expect to spend about two hours for all three sections. Students can choose In-Person or Remote/Online Placement Testing.
Click here for NEXT GENERATION ACCUPLACER preparation resources.
To test you will need to:
- Complete the KCC Admission Application
- Provide a current photo ID (student ID or government-issued ID, driver’s license, state ID or passport)
- Allow one to three hours for testing depending on the number of sections you take
In-person testing is free UNLESS it is a retake. Retake fees are $5 per test section, due before testing. Students must wait a full 24 hours from the time of finishing a test to retest. Retest fees may be paid ahead of time by phone with a credit or debit card by contacting the Registrar’s Office at 269-965-5522 or when you come in to complete the test.
Please note: If you have not provided your high school transcript and/or ACT, SAT or PSAT scores that are less than five years old to KCC, do so prior to testing. Sufficient test scores or final high school transcripts with a cumulative, non-weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher may eliminate or reduce your need for placement testing. Also send your official college/university transcripts because an evaluation may determine transfer credits and/or may reduce or eliminate the need to complete testing.
Send documents or questions to records@kellogg.edu or call 269-965-5522 for assistance.
Students with a documented disability may submit documentation identifying your accommodation need to the Center for Student Success so that we can assist your testing experience.
In-Person Placement Testing
Appointments are strongly recommended for in-person testing as walk-ins may not be able to be accommodated in order to maintain social distancing.
Click a link below to schedule an in-person placement test at one of our four testing locations:
Remote/Online Placement Testing
Remote/online placement testing offers a convenient way to test remotely with a live proctor/representative. A proctoring fee of $28 (plus tax) is paid online to a third-party testing agency when you schedule an appointment.
You must also have a computer (no cell phones) with camera/audio capabilities to test remotely.
To test remotely/online, please email your online testing request with the following details to testing@kellogg.edu:
- Test sections (Reading, Writing, Math, Full Assessment, ESL, etc.)
- Your full name
- Your K-ID number
A voucher number will be generated and instructions to register/schedule a test session with Examity will be sent to your KCC student email account.
After Testing
- Contacting Academic Advising at advising@kellogg.edu to set up an advising appointment
- Verifying your address with the Registrar’s Office
- Completing KCC’s free Online Learner Orientation so that you may register for classes
