ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Karen French, of Kalamazoo, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics from Western Michigan University in 1976, later adding a teaching certificate that led to 30 years of teaching art. French became a full-time elementary art teacher at Portage Public Schools in 1996 and has been working in Aesthetic Education since the early 1990s. She was awarded an Excellence in Education Award from the Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency (KRESA) in 2018, near her retirement. Throughout her career she has continued to make art, participate in exhibitions and enter competitions.
Honore Lee, of Grand Haven, is coordinator of the Aesthetic Education program for the Muskegon Area ISD and an Art History instructor at Muskegon Community College. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art at Western Michigan University in 1994 and has a long history in facilitating art education, including at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and KRESA’s Education for the Arts Aesthetic Education Program. A member of the Southwest Michigan Printmakers guild, Lee has received many honors and awards for her work, including a 2015 Kalamazoo Artistic Development Initiative grant from the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo. Her work has been included in galleries throughout the U.S. and is a part of numerous private collections.

Event Details
Kellogg Community College will be hosting a one-stop-shop event at the College’s Regional Manufacturing Technology Center (RMTC) campus in Battle Creek March 1, when current and future students can complete the steps to sign up for Industrial Trades training.
KCC’s RMTC Express Enrollment Event will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, at the center, located at 405 Hill Brady Road in Battle Creek. The event will offer students everything they need to start a training program in the industrial trades as early as this month, including financial aid assistance, advising, a tour of the campus and onsite registration.
The RMTC is KCC’s campus for Industrial Trades and workforce training students. Located in the Fort Custer Industrial Park in Battle Creek, the facility is a true industrial facility with hundreds of working machines, technical tools and equipment in dozens of training labs to offer students and trainees hands-on, real-world experience in their chosen career field.
The facility also includes many of the amenities available on other KCC campuses, including classrooms, computer labs, a student resource center and a break room. RMTC students can also register for training modules onsite.
KCC Director of Admissions Jenni Kotowski said the upcoming Express Enrollment event is the perfect way for students interested in trades to complete the admissions process in one place. By attending the event, students can receive hands-on guidance through each step of the enrollment process with the goal of leaving Express Enrollment as a registered student.
Individuals who are new to the College and interested in attending the event to take advantage of the fast-track services offered should bring the following information with them:
> A photo ID
> Transcripts from high school and all colleges attended
> ACT, PSAT or SAT scores (which can be used in place of KCC’s placement test if less than five years old)
> Individuals interested in financial aid assistance should bring their 2021 federal tax information
For more information about the Express Enrollment Event at the RMTC, contact KCC’s Admissions office at [email protected] or 269-965-4153.
Industrial Trades students at KCC can enroll at any time during the semester and start training in as little as a day from first applying to the College. General student registration information, including links to registration instructions, policies, tuition and fees and other information, is available online at kellogg.edu/registration.

One hotel room, four shades of comedy.
That’s the tagline for Kellogg Community College’s one-weekend-only production of Neil Simon’s “California Suite,” which runs Thursday through Sunday on campus in Battle Creek.
The 1976 comedy is a collection of four one-act plays set in the same hotel room in the 1970s. It was later adapted into a movie by the same name.
KCC showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 16, Friday, March 17, and Saturday, March 18, and 3 p.m. Sunday, March 19, at the Binda Performing Arts Center, on campus at 450 North Ave. Tickets are $10 for KCC students and employees and $15 for the general public.
Theatre professor and KCC Theatre Program Coordinator Brad Poer said that “while all are classified as comedies, the tone ranges from more serious emotional character studies with wit and one-liners throughout to more chaotic slapstick farce.”
There is some “PG-13-ish” language throughout, he said, so some parental discretion in advised.
Poer said “California Suite” was selected as the College’s spring-semester production as a kind of mirror to the camp and edginess of “The Rocky Horror Show,” which was performed in the fall. It also provides an opportunity for four KCC Theatre veterans to get some directorial experience, as each one-act will be associate directed by a former KCC Theatre student.
“Actors thrive when they learn to work with different styles and delivery of direction,” Poer, who usually directs KCC Theatre productions himself, said. “For this production I’m serving under the banner of Production Director and acting as a sounding board/mentor and as a producer of the show overall, and the four veterans are serving as Associate Directors, each in charge of the vision and communication for each individual one-act.”
Biographies of each associate director follow.
Khaliid Canales-King, 29, of Kalamazoo
Associate Director of “The Visitors from New York”
Canales-King started participating in KCC Theater in 2011 before transferring to Western Michigan University for the BFA acting program in 2013. He has participated in multiple shows with KCC in the past, including Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap,” “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” He is currently working for Public Media Network in Kalamazoo while producing an online sketch comedy series called “What’sUpNext?” with help from other KCC alumni.
Hunter King, 23, of Kalamazoo
Associate Director of “The Visitors from Chicago”
King has been performing with KCC Theatre since 2013. He attended dual enrollment courses at KCC in high school before attending Western Michigan University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Secondary Education degree in English in 2022. King has performed in several KCC Theatre productions in the past, including “The Nerd,” “Loserville” and, most recently, “The Rocky Horror Show.” He currently is a ninth grade English teacher at Battle Creek Central High School and works locally with organizations such as What A Do Theatre and the Battle Creek Community Foundation.
Patrick Lucas, 33, of Battle Creek
Associate Director of “The Visitors from Philadelphia”
Lucas graduated from KCC with Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees in 2016. Lucas has performed in many productions at KCC, including “The Pirates of Penzance,” “Loserville” and “The Bomb-itty of Errors.” These days Lucas spends his time singing baritone in the Kellogg Singers choir and streaming on Twitch under the name Patback2DaFuture, where he has amassed a dedicated following.
Seth Allred, 22, of Battle Creek
Associate Director of “The Visitors from London”
Allred graduated from KCC with Associate in Arts and Associate in International Studies degrees in 2019. He transferred to Western Michigan University where he graduated with a degree in Spanish and English Education in 2022. Allred has performed in several KCC productions in the past, including “Our Town,” “All in the Timing” and “The Rocky Horror Show.” Additionally, Allred served as the vice president of Encore Theatre Company, KCC’s student-run theatre club. In 2019, during his time as a student, he performed in and served as a producer of Encore’s production of “Kill Me Deadly.”
“While each associate director has their own voice and style of interacting with the script and the actors, all are approaching the project under the general philosophy of kindness, curiosity, empathic practice and informal passion that underlies all KCC Theatre productions,” Poer said.
For more information, contact Poer at [email protected]. Ticket reservations can be made through the KCC Theatre Box Office at 269-965-4154.

Kellogg Community College’s monthly Fresh Food Distribution events returned to campus in January and will continue through the Spring 2023 semester.
The events are a partnership with the South Michigan Food Bank that provide free fresh produce, baked goods and protein items to KCC student and community members during a pickup event the third Tuesday of each month on campus in Battle Creek. Students and others from the community can simply drive or walk up during the event and pick up a free box of food, free of charge while supplies last.
(Registration with the Food Bank is required and processed onsite.)
KCC distributed approximately 500 boxes of fresh food to those in need through the initiative over the course of five events during the Fall 2022 semester. The first Fresh Food Distribution event this semester was Jan. 17.
Fresh Food Distribution events are held in Parking Lot G – the parking lot next to the Miller Physical Education Building – on campus at 450 North Ave. in Battle Creek. Future distribution events will be held at 1 p.m. on the following Tuesdays:
• Feb. 21
• March 21
• April 18
• May 16
The Fresh Food Distribution events are just one part of a growing food insecurity initiative at KCC that also includes the campus Bruin Baskets, a campus food pantry initiative that provides free grab-and-go snacks for students at a half dozen stations on campuses in Battle Creek, Coldwater and Hastings.

The event will welcome Black-owned businesses, entrepreneurs, startups and supporters to KCC to collaborate, network and strengthen relationships in the local community. It is free and open to the public.
