NREMT Certification Information
The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) is the national certification organization for Emergency Medical Responders (EMR), Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMT), and Paramedics. National Registry certification is recognized nationwide and is commonly used by states, including Michigan, as part of the EMS licensure process.
Kellogg Community College’s EMS programs prepare students to successfully complete the National Registry certification process and begin careers in Emergency Medical Services.

Certification Process
Step 1: Complete an Approved EMS Education Program
Successfully complete your KCC EMS program and meet all course, laboratory, clinical, and field requirements.
Step 2: Create Your NREMT Account
Create an account through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians website and submit your certification application.
Step 3: Receive Authorization to Test (ATT)
Once your education has been verified and your application is approved, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT).
Step 4: Complete the National Registry Examination Process
Candidates must successfully complete all required National Registry examinations and competency requirements for their certification level.
Step 5: Apply for Michigan Licensure
National Registry certification and Michigan licensure are separate processes. After earning National Registry certification, candidates must apply for state licensure through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).
Certification Requirements by Level
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
Candidates must:
- Successfully complete an approved EMR education program.
- Meet all current National Registry and State of Michigan requirements.
- Successfully complete the National Registry certification process.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Candidates must:
- Successfully complete an approved EMT education program.
- Meet all current National Registry and State of Michigan requirements, including psychomotor competency verification as applicable.
- Successfully complete the National Registry cognitive examination.
Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
Candidates must:
- Successfully complete an approved AEMT education program.
- Complete all Student Minimum Competencies (SMCs).
- Demonstrate competency in required skills and patient care activities throughout the educational program.
- Successfully complete the National Registry cognitive examination.
Paramedic
Candidates must:
- Successfully complete an approved Paramedic education program.
- Complete all Student Minimum Competencies (SMCs).
- Demonstrate competency in required skills and patient care activities throughout the educational program.
- Successfully complete the National Registry cognitive examination.
Important Update for AEMT and Paramedic Candidates
Beginning July 1, 2024, the National Registry discontinued the Advanced EMT and Paramedic psychomotor examinations.
Competency for AEMT and Paramedic candidates is now verified through approved educational programs using Student Minimum Competencies (SMCs) and program-based competency verification.
Candidates are no longer required to attend an external National Registry psychomotor examination site for AEMT or Paramedic certification.
What Are Student Minimum Competencies (SMCs)?
Student Minimum Competencies are National Registry-required competencies that demonstrate readiness for entry-level practice.
Competencies are assessed throughout the educational program and include areas such as:
- Patient assessment
- Airway management
- Medication administration
- Cardiology and resuscitation
- Trauma care
- Medical emergencies
- Pediatric care
- Clinical decision-making
- Professional behavior and communication
Kellogg Community College faculty and clinical and field preceptors evaluate and verify these competencies throughout the educational program.
