COMMUNITY INTEGRATED PARAMEDIC

The Community Paramedicine program at Kellogg Community College is at the forefront of an evolving healthcare delivery model. This innovative approach enhances accessibility to essential services by deploying specially trained Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers in expanded roles. Within this program, Community Paramedics play a vital role in delivering care to patients in non-urgent settings, such as their homes, under the supervision of a physician or advanced practice provider. This proactive strategy aims to extend the reach of primary care and public health services by leveraging EMS personnel for patient assessments.

In the last decade, Community Paramedic programs have played a crucial role in addressing healthcare deficiencies both in the U.S. and internationally. These programs leverage Emergency Medical Service (EMS) personnel to bridge gaps in the healthcare system, with a specific focus on the continuous management of non-acute illnesses, mental health issues, and follow-up care for chronic conditions, operating around the clock. The Community Paramedic, adept at non-emergency interactions within the community, excels in providing enhanced care. Their seamless integration and coordination with various essential services, along with improved patient navigation, contribute to reducing unnecessary emergency department visits, lowering hospital readmissions, enhancing patient quality of life, and ultimately lowering overall healthcare costs.

Community Paramedics Provide:

  • Better Access to healthcare for rural and remote communities
  • Paramedics working alongside other health care professionals without overlapping roles
  • Fewer hand-offs between healthcare professionals
  • Fewer gaps in health care services
  • Fewer unnecessary 911 calls and trips to the ER
  • Recruiting and retaining paramedics in communities with low call volumes
