Why Study Theatre at KCC?

KCC’s Theatre curriculum emphasizes collaboration, creativity and commitment in the productions and courses offered to students and the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo areas at large. KCC understands and believes in the power of performance and KCC Theatre programming exists to demonstrate what theatre can do for students in the classroom while entertaining students and community members alike.

Theatre Productions

KCC offers two mainstage productions each school year, including a drama or comedy each fall and a musical each spring. The production season offers opportunities for KCC students and community members alike to gain practical and artistic experience both onstage and backstage. KCC holds open auditions for each production and welcomes anyone interested in donating their time and energy in the areas of set construction, stage lighting, stage management, costuming and makeup.

The Binda Theatre and Davidson Auditorium

The centerpiece of KCC’s Binda Performing Arts Center, the Binda Theatre, is where each KCC Theatre production is held. Extensive building renovations in 2014 doubled the size of the lobby, improved acoustics and other functional aspects of the theater space and allowed for the integration of new technologies. The 300-plus-seat theatre also serves as classrooms for several KCC Theatre classes each semester.

Also recently renovated, the Davidson Auditorium, located in the Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center, includes seating for more than 100 and houses several smaller-scale productions each semester in addition to serving as a teaching space for KCC Theatre students.

Encore Theatre Company

KCC’s student theatre club is known as the Encore Theatre Company. Encore is open to all students interested in developing theatrical experiences on and off campus. The goal of the company is to entertain and educate audiences, explore theatre and expose drama to all age groups. Students are encouraged to offer their support and talents to the community. In addition to other arts-based initiatives, the student-led theatre company produces two mainstage “Mich-Mash” theatre productions each semester.
