Kellogg Community College will exhibit more than two dozen works in the signature colorful, illustrative style of Grand Rapids artist Emily Luyk starting Jan. 21 on campus in Battle Creek.
Luyk’s exhibit, titled “Where They Live,” will run through Feb. 13 in the Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center’s Eleanor R. and Robert A. DeVries Gallery, on campus at 450 North Ave. in Battle Creek.
The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular gallery hours, which are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays.
An opening reception with the artist – also free and open to the public – will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, in the gallery.
Luyk is a full-time illustrator, fine artist and muralist whose detailed drawings and paintings depict surreal, fantastic scenes focused on flora, fauna and the cosmos.
“Where They Live” is a collection of 26 such such works created between 2021 and 2024 with pen and acrylic ink, “inspired by the connections and mysteries found, or potentially still undiscovered, in the natural universe,” according to the artist.
Luyk earned an Associate of Arts degree from Grand Rapids Community College and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (with honors) from Kendall College of Art and Design, with a focus in illustration and metal working.
Luyk spends most of the year touring the country to participate in some of the nation’s most prestigious fine art fairs, including the Old Town Art Fair in Chicago and the Plaza Art Fair in Kansas City. Recent awards include Best in Category at Art on the Square in Belleville, Illinois; an Award of Merit at the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival in Winter Park, Florida; and an Honorable Mention at the Penrod Arts Fair in Indianapolis.

Kellogg Community College will open a monthlong series of Black History Month events with the return of its popular Community-wide Hymn and Spirituals Sing-along Feb. 2.
The event will begin promptly at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, in the auditorium of the Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center, located on campus at 450 North Ave. in Battle Creek. Admission is free and open to the public, but a freewill offering will be collected to support future music initiatives at the College.
The sing-along event will be conducted by KCC Music Area Coordinator and Vocal Arts Director Dr. Gerald Case-Blanchard, who will lead the audience in singing traditional Christian hymns and African American spirituals favored across a variety of denominations. KCC faculty pianists Nancy Brown and Kathy Cary will accompany on the piano in addition to performing special music.
Hymnals with lyrics and music will be provided as community members are given the chance to sing a wide variety of selections, ranging from classic traditional to contemporary Christian worship songs.
In addition to pre-selected hymns and spirituals, audience members will have opportunity to call out their favorites from the audience.
This is anticipated to be the final year of the Community-wide Hymn and Spirituals Sing-along event, which in past years has been presented by the College’s Sacred Music Certificate Program. That certificate program has been deactivated in anticipation of the launch of a new Associate in Fine Arts in Music degree, to be formally announced by the College in the coming weeks and launching with the Fall 2025 semester.
