INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH

Kellogg Community College uses information from various internal and external sources to ensure that we are providing the best educational experience that we can to our students. Our Institutional Research Department is focused primarily on two areas: information that is used internally to make data-driven decisions and information that is reported to external agencies. Academic Inquiry and Analysis works primarily on internal projects and Institutional Compliance Reporting works primarily with external agencies.

Academic Inquiry & Analysis

Academic Inquiry and Analysis is the area of the College that is responsible for assisting in quality improvement processes. The following are examples of recent and ongoing projects:

  • Student evaluation of the quality of instruction
  • Analysis of course enrollment and student success data
  • Program performance review surveys
  • Development of BusinessObjects reports
  • Staff training in data collection and analysis

For more information, please contact Academic Inquiry and Analysis Director Karel Asbury at 269-565-2651.

Institutional Compliance Reporting

Institutional Compliance Reporting is primarily responsible for supplying a wide range of data for external reporting in accordance with federal regulations set forth by the Higher Education Act of 1965. This institutional data is available through the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Additionally, the Michigan Community College Network collects and reports a wide range of information about Michigan community colleges.

Voluntary Framework for Accountability

The VFA is a principal accountability framework for community colleges with measures defined to encompass the full breadth of the community college mission and the diversity of students’ goals and educational experiences.

More than 60 community college leaders guided the 18-month development of the VFA, resulting in the release of more appropriate measures. The VFA gauges student progress and outcomes, including pre-collegiate preparation (such as developmental education), academic progress and momentum points, completion and transfer measures and workforce outcomes for career and technical education. The VFA measures are described in detail in the VFA brochure.
